100'000 virtual bricks for the reconstruction of the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum
WHY?
Museum Mission.
During the Holocaust in Latvia nearly 100'000 Jews were killed. They were from different origins, from different countries. Only about some of them we have family stories, photos and documents.
But about most of them nothing left. And mostly big numbers are used to show the scale of catastrophe. But each person from the exterminated community deserves to be remembered as a person.
We see the Mission of the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum as careful and attentive research about every Holocaust victim in Latvia, preservation of memories and educational work for the better future.

WHERE?
Short History of the Museum
In 2010 the brave initiative of Rabbi Dr Menachem Barkahan, Shamir Association Chairman, was brought to life and the first Museum dedicated to the Holocaust in Latvia appeared close to the Riga city centre. The initial name of the Museum was Riga Ghetto Museum which later was extended till the Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum.
Chosen location was out of the borders of former Ghetto territory. The idea of the Museum was to speak about Shoah in a most accessible place. Also Holocaust in Riga occured not so only in Ghetto but rather in the three masscare places, three concentration camps and eleven labor camps which were located in Riga.
The Museum was started in the territory and building generously provided by the Riga Council in terms of special agreement with Shamir Association for 10 years, (in 2020 the agreement was prolonged for another 10 years). The initially the municipal property was in a bad condition, but thanks to the effort of NGO it became a recognizable place, oftenly visited by tourists.
The biggest challenge NGO met was the condition of the buildings, where only small part of it is heated. This is a reason why in a cold season, which refers to the teaching year ir is difficult to run educational activities.
Because of that Shamir Association developed the Museum Reconstruction Project, which in 2023 received an accept from the Riga Municipality and State Construction Agency.
